Historic Quarter

This tour consists of exploring the origin and the changes of the central area of Buenos Aires, from the Spanish colonization, the “parisian turn” in the early 20th century, to the recent boom of tourism.

The tour starts at the Plaza de Mayo, the initial site of the “Spanish foundation”. There we will describe the original Buenos Aires planning, typical of most of the cities in Latin America, and the changes that occurred along the next 400 years. From smugglers paradise to a cosmopolitan city.

Afterwards we will dive into the San Telmo neighborhood, the oldest in town. This area has passed through different times: center of the catholic orders in BA, heart of the african culture and land of Tango’s origin, until the recent process of gentrification.

By strolling around its cobblestone streets, we will perceive the atmosphere of a neighborhood under permanent change. Colonial houses, impressive churches and a unique old market live together with artist's studios, antique stores and Tango parlors.

At the end we will visit a “conventillo” (original immigrants tenement), and we will finish the journey having a coffee in a notable bar, one of the remains of the neighborhood that still survives.

Some tour highlights: Plaza de Mayo, Cabildo (ancient City Hall), Pink House (Government House), Cathedral, Jesuits block, Zanjón de Granados, Casa Mínima, San Telmo surrounding (square, old market, church), Conventillo de los Ezeiza, Parque Lezama, Notable bars, Russian Orthodox Church.
